Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith is a state university in Varanasi, established in 1921 as a symbol of the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Swadeshi ideal championed by Mahatma Gandhi. The university was created as a nationalist alternative to the British-controlled universities of the era, founded on the principles of self-reliance, service and vernacular education. Today it serves as a full-fledged state university affiliating hundreds of colleges across eastern Uttar Pradesh. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in a wide range of arts, science, commerce, law, education and social sciences disciplines. It maintains a special focus on Hindi-medium instruction and on programmes relevant to rural and grassroots development, including courses in rural economics, social work, education, and mass communication. The university has a strong legacy of producing teachers, social workers, lawyers, journalists and public administrators who have served the Hindi heartland. The Vidyapith's library holds a rich collection of Gandhian literature, rare Hindi texts and primary source materials from the Independence movement, making it a unique archival resource. The campus in Varanasi is modest but steeped in history, with buildings that retain an architectural character from the independence era. The university also runs several affiliated colleges in districts across eastern UP, extending access to higher education to students in towns and rural areas. Research programmes at the Vidyapith focus on rural development, Gandhian philosophy, Hindi literature and social sciences, reflecting the founding ideals of the institution.
