About Me
Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) was established in 1969 in Amritsar, Punjab, to commemorate the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith. Spread across a sprawling 500-acre campus, GNDU stands as one of the most prestigious state universities in northern India, accredited with NAAC A++ and consistently ranked in the top 100 institutions by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
The university offers over 280 academic programmes across disciplines including Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Engineering, Technology, Management, Education, Pharmacy, and Physical Education. With 55 teaching departments and more than 200 affiliated colleges across the Majha region of Punjab, GNDU plays a pivotal role in shaping higher education in the state.
Research is a cornerstone of GNDU's identity. The university houses several advanced research centres focusing on Nanoscience, Biotechnology, Human Genetics, and Punjabi Language & Literature. GNDU's Guru Nanak Studies department is internationally renowned for Sikh and Punjabi heritage scholarship. The university has received substantial grants from DST, UGC, DBT, and ICSSR for cutting-edge interdisciplinary research.
Campus life at GNDU is vibrant and culturally enriching. The iconic Youth Festival — one of the largest inter-university cultural festivals in India — is held every year, drawing thousands of students from across Punjab. Sports facilities include an Olympic-size swimming pool, a well-equipped gymnasium, and courts for hockey, basketball, football, and athletics. The university hostel system accommodates thousands of students in separate well-maintained blocks for men and women.
Internationalization is a key priority. GNDU has MoUs with more than 60 universities abroad, enabling student and faculty exchange, collaborative research, and joint degree programmes. Alumni of GNDU hold distinguished positions in government, academia, judiciary, arts, science, and industry worldwide. The university is committed to inclusive education and runs several scholarship schemes for economically weaker and marginalized communities. GNDU continues to be a beacon of learning rooted in the timeless values of Sikh philosophy — service, compassion, and pursuit of knowledge.
