English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU)

The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), located in Tarnaka, Hyderabad, is India's only central university dedicated exclusively to the study of English and foreign languages. Originally established in 1958 as the Central Institute of English, and later elevated to the status of a deemed university and then a central university, EFLU has shaped the teaching, research, and scholarship of English language and literature in India for over six decades. Accredited with NAAC A++ — the highest grade — EFLU is the intellectual home for about 3,000 students from across India and numerous international students, particularly from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, drawn to its unique linguistic environment. The university offers MA programmes in English, MA in 12 foreign languages (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Telugu, and more), specialised PG diplomas in Translation, ELT (English Language Teaching), and Linguistics, as well as robust PhD programmes. Admission to PG programmes is through CUET-PG or EFLU's own entrance test; fees are highly subsidised at ₹8,000–₹20,000 per year, making it extraordinarily accessible. EFLU's campus life is culturally luminous — the EFL Drama Society is one of India's finest university theatre groups, staging productions in English and other languages. The film culture is equally strong, with weekly screenings and an active Film Club. The EFLU community is known for its cosmopolitan intellectual atmosphere, multilingual diversity, and vibrant literary festivals.
