About Me
Gauhati University, established in 1948, is the oldest and largest university in northeastern India. Situated on the south bank of the mighty Brahmaputra river in Guwahati, the university is set on a 330-acre forested campus that is home to diverse flora and fauna. Gauhati University is accredited with NAAC 'A' grade and is affiliated with 218 colleges across Assam, making it one of the most influential educational institutions in the entire northeastern region.
The university offers more than 200 programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels across disciplines including Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Engineering, Technology, Pharmacy, Business Administration, and Mass Communication. The Departments of Assamese, History, Anthropology, and Political Science have earned particular renown for scholarship pertaining to Northeast India. The university is also a major centre for biodiversity research, given its location at the confluence of the Eastern Himalayan and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots.
Gauhati University has played a defining role in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Assam. The GU Museum houses rare artefacts, manuscripts, and ethnographic collections relating to the tribal and indigenous communities of Northeast India. The university publishes several peer-reviewed journals and its faculty contribute extensively to literature on Assamese culture, tribal rights, ecological sustainability, and regional history.
International collaborations with universities in Europe, the US, Southeast Asia, and SAARC countries enrich the academic ecosystem. The campus hosts multiple research institutes and centres, including the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), and the Biotechnology Hub. Student life is enriched by the vibrant cultural mosaic of Assam — Bihu festivals, tribal cultural programmes, and inter-departmental competitions are regular campus events.
Alumni of Gauhati University have gone on to serve as Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, Supreme Court Justices, scientists at ISRO, and leading figures in arts, literature, and civil society. The university remains committed to its founding vision of becoming the intellectual nerve centre of Northeast India.
