Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), formerly known as Nagpur University, is one of the oldest and largest universities in Maharashtra, established in 1923 under the Nagpur University Act. Renamed in honour of the revered saint-poet Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj in 1997, the university serves as the apex academic body for the Vidarbha region. RTMNU is a unitary and affiliating university with over 700 affiliated colleges spread across Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal districts, catering to more than 4.5 lakh students. The university offers programmes in arts, science, commerce, law, education, engineering, medicine, pharmacy, architecture, and management through its campus departments and affiliated institutions. The university campus in Nagpur spans 240 acres and houses 35 postgraduate departments. RTMNU holds a NAAC B++ accreditation and is recognised by UGC. It has produced notable alumni including politicians, judges, scientists, and business leaders from the Vidarbha region. The university library holds over 1.5 lakh books and journals. Annual university events, sports meets, and cultural programmes bring together students from hundreds of colleges across the jurisdiction.
