About Me
Kamala Devi Harris served as the 49th Vice President of the United States from 2021 to 2025 — the first woman, first Black American, and first South Asian American Vice President in US history. Born in Oakland, California in 1964 to a Tamil-Indian mother (Shyamala Gopalan, a breast-cancer researcher) and a Jamaican economist father, she graduated from Howard University and UC Hastings College of Law, and rose through California's legal ranks as San Francisco District Attorney and then California Attorney General before winning a US Senate seat from California in 2016. She was Joe Biden's running mate in 2020 and served as VP through 2025. In 2024 she became the Democratic Party's presidential nominee after Biden withdrew, ultimately losing to Donald Trump. She retains deep ties to India through her mother's family in Chennai and remains one of the most visible South Asian figures in global politics.
