National Institute of Design Ahmedabad

The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, established in 1961, is India's foremost design institution and is often called the "Design IIT" for its unmatched prestige and selectivity in the design field. Located in Paldi, Ahmedabad, NID is an autonomous national institute under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India. With approximately 500 students across all programmes, NID's acceptance rate of 1–2% for B.Des makes it one of the most competitive design schools in the world. The four-year B.Des programme spans 11 specialisations — Industrial Design, Communication Design, Textile & Apparel Design, Film & Video Communication, Ceramic & Glass Design, Furniture & Interior Design, Animation Film Design, Exhibition Design, Graphic Design, Toy & Game Design, and Apparel Design. The two-year M.Des programme is for working design professionals and recent graduates seeking advanced specialisation. Admission is through NID DAT (Design Aptitude Test) — a two-stage test of drawing ability, spatial reasoning, creative thinking, and design sensibility. NID's alumni are responsible for the visual identity of virtually every major Indian brand, institution, and public communication system — from the Indian passport design to corporate logos, street signage systems, and film titles. The campus itself is a design artefact, housing workshops for every material and medium. NID's annual Student Design Show is a landmark event in the Indian design calendar.
