Sri Lanka won the ICC Cricket World Cup on 17 March 1996 under Arjuna Ranatunga's captaincy, beating Australia by 7 wickets at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium. Sanath Jayasuriya was named Player of the Tournament for his explosive opening batting. The only World Cup title in Sri Lanka's history.
