The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan (completed by Brandon Sanderson) is the most expansive high fantasy epic of its era — 14 novels plus a prequel, with over 90 million copies sold. Set in a world where time is a wheel and the Dragon is reborn in every age to fight the Dark One, it follows Rand al'Thor from sheep farmer to the most powerful man alive.
Sub-series and arcs: The first five books focus on Rand's emergence as the Dragon Reborn; books 6-10 cover the political fragmentation of the Aes Sedai and the rise of Rand's ta'veren allies Mat and Perrin; the final three (co-written with Brandon Sanderson) build to Tarmon Gai'don — the Last Battle against the Dark One.
