Lagaan (2001) is Ashutosh Gowariker's epic historical sports drama starring Aamir Khan as Bhuvan — a peasant who challenges British colonial officers to a cricket match to have the village's unfair tax (lagaan) lifted. The film was India's official Oscar entry and received the Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film — one of only three Indian films ever nominated. Aamir Khan also produced the film through Aamir Khan Productions.
