On August 11, 2008, Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle event at the Beijing Olympics — becoming the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal in the history of independent India. His score of 700.5 set a world record. The win was the culmination of years of obsessive preparation documented in his autobiography A Shot at History, and remains one of the greatest sporting achievements in Indian history.
